Self-Regulation and NZAC Registration

NZAC Self-Regulation and Registration with the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act, (HPCA Act)

Counsellors in Aotearoa New Zealand can register with Te Rōpū Kaiwhiriwhiri o Aotearoa, New Zealand Association of Counsellors, NZAC.

This self-regulation process was chosen by Counsellors to ensure safe practice for clients and to be responsive to clients’ best interests, using the key principles of equity and partnership guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

NZAC is a professional association registered as an Incorporated Society.

Choosing not to be state regulated under the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act, the HPCA Act, does not disadvantage Counsellors. They are also able to apply for positions within the state sector due to our agreement with Te Whatu Ora.
